FAQs

What types of programs does Felicity Mental Health offer?

Felicity Mental Health provides Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) for individuals dealing with mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, OCD, chronic pain, and sleep disorders. We also offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) as an innovative treatment option for those who have not responded to traditional therapies. These programs are available at our Santa Barbara and Los Angeles locations, with some services available California-wide through telehealth.

What is the difference between IOP and PHP?

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) offer a flexible treatment option for those who need structured therapy but are able to maintain their daily responsibilities, such as work or school. Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), on the other hand, provide a more intensive treatment environment, typically requiring a greater time commitment. Both programs are designed to offer comprehensive care without the need for inpatient hospitalization.

What Indications Can the IOP/PHP Program Help?

Our programs are suitable for patients struggling with symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, OCD, stress and neuropathic pain. Some aspects of our IOP/PHP treatment programs are available to everyone (group therapy, individual therapy etc.) however other elements (ketamine and EMDR) are only for those who medically qualify as dictated by our physicians.

What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) combines low-dose ketamine with guided psychotherapy sessions. It has been shown to provide relief for individuals suffering from treatment-resistant mental health conditions such as depression, PTSD, anxiety, and chronic pain. KAP helps patients process deep-seated emotional issues, providing new perspectives and improved emotional regulation in a safe, therapeutic environment.

How Does Ketamine Work?

Ketamine treats depression by targeting the brain's glutamate system, specifically the NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors. Unlike traditional antidepressants that influence serotonin or dopamine, ketamine boosts glutamate production, a neurotransmitter key to brain plasticity. This action promotes the growth of new synaptic connections, helping the brain "reconnect" pathways that regulate mood and emotions. The result is often rapid relief from depressive symptoms, sometimes within hours, particularly for treatment-resistant depression. Additionally, ketamine reduces the activity of the brain’s default mode network, which is associated with negative thought patterns, further helping to alleviate depressive states.

Is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy Safe?

Ketamine was first developed as a pain management medication that was commonly used by anesthesiologists. Over the past few decades, extensive research has been done on the mental health benefits of administering ketamine to patients who have not responded favorably to antidepressants.
