First Responders Mental Health Program in Southern California
Felicity Mental Health has a program only for first responders, including police, firefighters, and paramedics. These heroes face unique challenges daily, and our program addresses their specific needs.
First Responders Program
Approximately 20 percent of first responders will meet the criteria for a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at some point during their career, and these numbers are growing.
First responders are often exposed to multiple threats and demands, confronted with multiple adverse situations and critical hostile events, under uncontrollable and unexpected scenarios, and occasionally even facing catastrophic and dangerous environments. They are trained to act toward uncertain situations, which require immediate action to surpass and cope with potentially traumatic incidents. Long and continued exposure to chronic and acute stressors makes first responders one of the most vulnerable and highest-risk groups among emergency workers.
Other consequences of cumulative trauma exposure include depression, anxiety, substance use and suicide, all of which are more common among firefighters and other first responders than in the general population. Alcohol and substance abuse often becomes a coping mechanism. A recent study found that more firefighters and police officers die by suicide than in the line of duty.
The problem-solving and “being in charge” work attitude that is a strength of first responders can also become a barrier in seeking help, as they might see vulnerability as a sign of failure, or they think they will look “weak” for discussing these issues
We are also aware that first responders sometimes can have a hard time trusting mental health providers, some of whom might not have much firsthand experience with understanding a first responder’s life and challenges. They often also find it impossible to share their tough work experiences with their families.
With-out help, trauma and chronic stress can lead to not only mental health consequences but also acute physical illness, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, obesity and chronic pain just to name a few.
That’s why I’d like to discuss ways Felicity Mental Health can help.
